Atari released Pong as a coin-operated arcade game in 1972. It's based on the sport called Ping Pong or, as Americans call it, Table Tennis. Pong was the first arcade game to have massive popularity in both arcade and home consoles when it was released on the Atari 2600 and on other future systems who replicated it. Nolan Bushnell says that Atari sold a total of 38,000 coin-operated Pong arcade games, although taking into account the large number of clones, it is estimated that over 100,000 units were sold, making Pong the most popular arcade game of all time.
